The Cerritos and Baja California Sur region offers a wide range of experiences that celebrate both the natural landscape and local culture. Whether you’re looking for adventure on land and sea, wildlife encounters, historical insights, or peaceful moments in nature, there’s plenty to explore within easy reach of Villa Luz. Below are some of our favorite activities and destinations worth adding to your itinerary.
Cerritos Beach is home to one of Baja’s most well-known and user-friendly surf breaks, offering consistent waves suitable for beginners through advanced surfers. The break is within walking distance of Villa Luz, making it easy to head down for a morning session or sunset surf. If you’re new to surfing or want to improve your skills, we recommend booking a lesson with Jibran from Get Stoked Surf School, a highly regarded local instructor known for his patient approach and deep knowledge of the break.
From late fall through early spring, you can join local conservation groups in turtle hatchling releases near Todos Santos. Volunteers help guide newly hatched sea turtles toward the ocean at sunset — a moving experience that supports local wildlife and gives visitors a rare, close-to-nature moment.
Wander the cobblestone streets of Downtown Todos Santos — a vibrant Pueblo Mágico filled with art galleries, boutique shops, cafés, and historic architecture. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon discovering local crafts, enjoying a café con leche, or browsing for souvenirs in one of Baja’s most charming towns.
Visit the historic Mission of Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Todos Santos, an 18th-century church that offers a glimpse into the region’s colonial past. The mission and its surroundings reflect the cultural roots of the area and provide a peaceful stop with architectural and historical interest.
The coastal trail at Punta Lobos provides spectacular views of the Pacific and winds along cliffs to a secluded beach with excellent snorkeling if conditions allow. It’s a rewarding moderate hike for outdoor lovers wanting dramatic scenery and a sense of rugged coastal wilderness close to Todos Santos.
During whale season (typically November through April), humpback and gray whales migrate along the Baja coast. A boat tour from Punta Lobos or nearby launch points can offer unforgettable sightings of breaching whales and other marine life. If you prefer to stay on land, many beaches in the area also provide shore-based whale watching opportunities during peak months.
Baja Sur fishing is world renowned. Why not head out on the Pacific and catch some fresh dorado, pargo, or huachinango with the collectivo of a decades-old fishing fleet, on a classic Mexican panga? These guys know where the fish are. Maybe even cook your catch at Villa Luz or bring it into one of the restaurants and have the local chefs cook it up for you. Contact Punta Lobos Fishing Charters for more information.
Your hosts offer a guided taco tour featuring some of the area’s favorite local taquerias. Over the course of a relaxed afternoon or evening, you’ll visit several spots, sample classic tacos, and get a feel for the local food scene beyond the beach. You’re welcome to drive yourself or ride along with us, with limited space available for shared transportation.
Enjoy a thoughtfully prepared meal at Villa Luz using fresh, local ingredients. Our private chef service is ideal for a relaxed night in, whether you’re celebrating something special or simply want to enjoy a great meal without cooking or going out.
Baja and its Baja 1000 races have inspired a culture of back desert exploration. Renting a side-by-side, ATV or dune buggy will give you this experience of exploring the backcountry and tearing through the desert on a self guided tour of your own. Go by yourself or get a crew together for a mini rally with your pals! Baja Rock Pirates can take care of all the details.
For a quieter beach escape, Secret Rocks Beach is a hidden gem with dramatic rocky formations, serene coves, and a natural atmosphere that feels far removed from busier beaches. The short walk or hike down to the shoreline is part of the adventure, and once there you can explore tide pools, snorkel in clear water, or simply relax with stunning coastal views.
A 90-minute drive to the other side of the peninsula, you'll find La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, known for its relaxed waterfront promenade (the malecón) with ocean views, cafés, sculptures, and street life. Nearby Balandra Beach is famed for its stunning shallow turquoise waters and iconic rock formations, ideal for wading, kayaking, or picture-perfect moments. Just beyond, Tecolote Beach offers wide white sand, gentle waves, and opportunities for water sports and beachside libations.
Just off the coast of La Paz, Espíritu Santo Island is a protected natural reserve known for its turquoise coves, white-sand beaches, and remarkable marine biodiversity. Surrounded by the waters of the Sea of Cortez, famously described by Jacques Cousteau as “the Aquarium of the World", the island and its surrounding islets offer opportunities to observe sea lions, tropical fish, seabirds, and other marine life in a pristine setting. Baja Adventure Co provides access to this extraordinary landscape, allowing visitors to explore secluded beaches, snorkel in clear waters, and experience one of Baja California Sur’s most iconic natural treasures.
Explore the lush canyon of Sol de Mayo, where a scenic trail leads to a refreshing waterfall and natural pools tucked into the rugged Sierra de la Laguna landscape. Nearby, the Santa Rita Hot Springs offer thermal waters and peaceful natural pools perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure. Both spots showcase a different side of Baja’s terrain, with warm waters, mountain foliage, and a serene environment far from the beach crowds.
